In 2007 John received an Emmy award for ‘Jamestown: Foundations of Freedom’, a 2007 Silver Telly and a 2008 Bronze Telly Award for his ‘Civil War in Hampton Roads’ film series. He has been nominated for a second Emmy award for his Civil War in Hampton Roads documentary in 2008.

John is the recipient of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 1993 President’s Award for Historic Preservation, The Civil War Society’s 1996 Preservation Award in 1996, The United Daughter’s of the Confederacy’s Jefferson Davis Gold Medal in 1999.
